Let me start with a small story. I had a referral call from the Cardiac ICU. They wanted me to see a patient with cardiac issues like palpitation, breathlessness, and chest pain. I was wondering what in the world a gynaecologist would do for a patient with cardiac issues. Finally, I came to know that the patient had very low haemoglobin levels, which led to the cardiac symptoms. The reason for low haemoglobin levels was heavy periods for a very long time. The lady was aware of the heavy flow but thought it was normal because she was reaching menopause and did not seek treatment.
Heavy periods are never normal, even nearing menopause. If left untreated, it can lead to critical situations, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. There are a few reasons why heavy periods can cause heart issues.
Anemia or low haemoglobin due to blood loss that has been happening for a long time. Because of the low iron, the red blood cells are not able to carry enough oxygen to the heart. This can increase the strain on the heart, leading to heart failure and cardiovascular diseases.
Apart from the hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance, heavy periods in women with regular cycles due to non-hormonal factors like fibroids and adenomyosis are at increased risk of developing heart problems because of high stress levels that leads to widespread inflammation.
What I need to do?
Heavy periods should never be ignored or left untreated for a long time. Consult your doctor to find out measures to keep your bleeding under control, whether it is medication or devices or through surgery.
Improve your iron stores. Women with heavy bleeding should make sure that they keep taking iron supplements and iron-rich food until their symptoms are treated. This helps to maintain a steady haemoglobin level and puts less strain on the heart.
Follow a heart-healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and reducing stress levels. What is more important is having regular screening for heart-related conditions. early diagnosis is the key to complete recovery and a better quality of life.
Your periods are not just a sign of Fertility, they are a reflection of your health. They are rightly called the fifth vital sign, any change in your periods can be a sign of an underlying, deeper health issue, and in turn lead to other health-related conditions of the heart, brain and bone.
So be aware of your period issues, take action when required.
A healthy period means a healthy heart.
